Cherathukal - Kumbalangi Nights - Lyrics

Lil old, compared to recent ones i posted here. But this is a beautiful slow melody from an even more beautiful movie "Kumbalangi Nights". One important lesson was the word "Cherathukal", never heard it before and had to ask around to know it meant "clay lamp, may have come from "cheratta" the coconut shell. Dont know enough of the etymology. Someone needs a build good useful and usable malayalam dictionary.

 As always i have published the english transliteration using my notation to match malayalam pronunciation of the words. I wanted to get meanings also, but need to research them. There are other sites that have them, but i am not convinced of them at this time.

Chayappattu - Sithara Krishnakumar

I happened to come across the term "chayapattu" in a show that Sithara was on. Intrigued me, and search on youtube brought this beautiful, short and sweet song. Lyrics were humble enough, but the music was even more courteous, rendering this lovely song. And its haunting me, as i hear it again and again and again.

This song from ARR is his dedication to Thamizh. He has always looked at thamizh more than just a language, a mode of communication. And this song assimilates those thoughts in beautiful words.

Thanks to a few who put out these lyrics, it was easier to construct. However had to make corrections based on my knowledge of thamizh and pronunciations. The english transliteration is even more difficult, trying to match the thamizh letter and match the sounds using english alphabets.

Thiruppugazh - Muthai Tharu (முத்தைத்தரு)

Dont quite recall when or how i was attracted to this tongue twister of a song. It stuck in my head for a long time, but more importantly my mind voice was telling me that i should try this. Just like any other fascinating song. I did, and not able to go beyond the first two words i gave up quickly

Back in 2014 or so, i attempted to decode the lyrics, break the song down and attempt to take a crack at this again. I wrote the lyrics down, stripped song into separate portions, one for each verse of this beautiful song, to allow me to play it in a loop. It worked. I was able to mouth the words "Muthai Muthai tharu pathi thirunakai athikkiRai sathi saravaNa muthi kkoru vithu gurupara ..EnavOthum. (முத்தைத்தரு பத்தித் திருநகை அத்திக்கிறை சத்திச் சரவண முத்திக்கொரு வித்துக் குருபர எனவோதும்)"

Sweet success! But short lived. I couldnt get past that first verse. Worse still that i lost focus and gave up. Fast forward another few years. I think in 2018, i tried again. One verse at a time, added them slowly to my ability to recite. One, one and two, one two and three, and then upto four. Slowly but steadily, i was able to recite without mistakes, the whole beautiful song.

These days i am able to sing the whole poem without flaws from my heart. However i dread recording this, as my sound will do no justice. But i feel quite elated inside as i render this.

Aasai Mugam Marandhu Pochae

 

"Aasai Mugam Marandhu Pochae" is poem written by Subramania Bharathi, or simply referred fondly as Bharathi or formally with his title as "Maha Kavi" Bharathiyar. 

So many of his poems are written with a passion for Kannan. Kannan is an interesting term that used in Thamizh culture. A direct reference to Lord Krishna, who affectionately called as Kannan, specially manifesting as the naughty child constantly upto some mischief. Numerous stories that glorify these acts. But this term therefore also equally applies to that special someone in your life that you love or are fond of.

This poem is written apparently lamenting the loss of a picture of his mother, the only one had (as per numerous sites and references on the web). However he played with words, specially using the term Kannan to allow dual references. Allowing the listener to apply the meaning appropriately. 

I came across this song on youtube quite by accident while i was still recovering from my Covid-19 attack. This rendition by Suchitra quickly caught my fancy. Bharathi words, or maybe because heard a few other poems, are relatively easy to grasp and understand. After playing it on loop for sometime, i had find more on the lyrics, meanings. Thats when i came across the story behind the song. These lyrics below are also thanks to many people on the internet. 

The english means as usual are mine, using my poetic license and ability to choose the most appropriate words to bring the best of the emotion and love associated with the poem.

The youtube video below of Suchi is the best i found. There were other renditions that attempted to fuse new music, or rendered in traditional carnatic style. The purists dont like her rendition, as is noted by a few on the comments. But there are always these egocentric uncles and aunties, who wont allow any freedom. Well, Suchi has done an excellent job, keeping it simple, and allowing the words to express its emotions and warmth, without overpowering music or using those puristic banal tones. More importantly her pronunciation of Thamizh words are also perfect. It still playing in loop. She unfortunately skipped a couple of verses (3rd and 5th), i guess to keep it short and grasp attention of today's music aficionados. Beautiful, i only wish there was a longer and complete version for people like me.
